NOTE
My bible study notes, BLOGS, and VLOGS aren’t, of course, exhaustive in thought or scripture. They are here to add to or get you started in conversation or your own bible studies.
As you may already know, a conversation topic or scripture out of context isn’t always fully applicable, but I hope you’re able to read something here that helps strengthen and encourage you and your relationships along as add to your faith.
GOSSIP BIBLE STUDY NOTES
GOSSIP
Idle talk of rumor, especially about the personal or private affairs of others
BULLYING
A blustering, quarrelsome, overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people; intimidate; domineer
SLANDER = CATA = AGAINST
Slander is not necessarily false, but against, causing others’ opinion of that person to be lower. Slander isn’t as much a matter of truth or lies but of love. I cannot be loving and slander at the same time. God is not asking us to “bite our tongue” but to genuinely love that person. When we don’t agree to God’s instructions, we are judging that beneficial law by saying “that doesn’t work for me” or “that law is inconvenient so I’m gonna do what works for me…”.
Proverbs 16:28
A perverse man sows strife, and a whisperer separates close friends.
Proverbs 26:20
For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, contention ceases.
Psalm 34:13
Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.
Psalm 52:4
Why do you brag of evil, “Big Man”? God’s mercy carries the day. You scheme catastrophe; your tongue cuts razor-sharp, artisan in lies. You love evil more than good, you call black white. You love malicious gossip, you foul-mouth.
1 Peter 3:10
For let him who wants to enjoy life and see good days [good—whether apparent or not] keep his tongue free from evil and his lips from guile (treachery, deceit).
James 3:6
It only takes a spark, remember, to set off a forest fire. A careless or wrongly placed word out of your mouth can do that. By our speech we can ruin the world, turn harmony to chaos, throw mud on a reputation, send the whole world up in smoke and go up in smoke with it, smoke right from the pit of hell.
Proverbs 26:22
The words of a whisperer or slanderer are like dainty morsels or words of sport [to some, but to others are like deadly wounds]; and they go down into the innermost parts of the body [or of the victim’s nature].
Proverbs 29:20
Observe the people who always talk before they think—even simpletons are better off than they are.
Proverbs 20:19 MSG Version
Gossips can’t keep secrets, so never confide in blabbermouths.
Proverbs 24:2
For their minds plot oppression and devise violence, and their lips talk of causing trouble and vexation.
Ephesians 4:29 MSG Version
Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of y9our mouth. Say only what helps, each word is a gift.
Ephesians 4:29 AMP Version
Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God’s favor) to those who hear it.
2 Timothy 2:16
…avoid all empty (vain, useless, idle) talk, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness
Matthew 12:36b
…on the day of judgment, men will have to give account for every idle (inoperative, nonworking) word we speak. For by your words you will be justified and acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned and sentenced.
Matthew 12:36b-37 MSG Version
…It’s your heart, not the dictionary, that gives meaning to your words. A good person produces good deeds and words season after season. An evil person is a blight on the orchard. Let me tell you something: Every one of these careless words is going to come back to haunt you. There will be a time of Reckoning. Words are powerful; take them seriously. Words can be your salvation. Words can also be your damnation.
Proverbs 19:1 AMP Version
Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is perverse in his speech and is a [self-confident] fool.
Prov 29:12 MSG Version
When a leader listens to malicious gossip, all the workers get infected with evil.
Proverbs 4:24
Put away from you false and dishonest speech, and willful and contrary talk put far from you.
Proverbs 4:24 MSG Version
Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life starts. Don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth; avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip. Keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions. Watch your step, and the road will stretch out smooth before you. Look neither right nor left; leave evil in the dust.
Zechariah 8:16-17 MSG Version
…And now here’s what I want you to do: Tell the truth, the whole truth, when you speak. Do the right thing by one another, both personally and in your courts. Don’t cook up plans to take unfair advantage of others. Don’t do or say what isn’t so. I hate all that stuff…
Psalm 5 MSG Version
You don’t socialize with Wicked, or invite Evil over as your house guest. Hot-Air-Boaster collapses in front of you; you shake your head over Mischief-Maker. God destroys Lie-Speaker; Blood-Thirsty and Truth-Bender disgust you.
Psalm 119:81-88 MSG Version
I’m homesick—longing for your salvation; I’m waiting for your word of hope. My eyes grow heavy watching for some sign of your promise; how long must I wait for your comfort? There’s smoke in my eyes—they burn and water, but I keep a steady gaze on the instructions you post. How long do I have to put up with all this? How long till you haul my tormentors into court? The arrogant godless try to throw me off track, ignorant as they are of God and his ways. Everything you command is a sure thing, but they harass me with lies. Help! They’ve pushed and pushed—they never let up— but I haven’t relaxed my grip on your counsel. In your great love revive me so I can alertly obey your every word.
Matthew 5:11-12 MSG Version
“Not only that—count yourselves blessed every time people put you down or throw you out or speak lies about you to discredit me. What it means is that the truth is too close for comfort and they are uncomfortable. You can be glad when that happens—give a cheer, even!—for though they don’t like it, I do! And all heaven applauds. And know that you are in good company. My prophets and witnesses have always gotten into this kind of trouble.
Ephesians 4:25 MSG Version
What this adds up to, then, is this: no more lies, no more pretense. Tell your neighbor the truth. In Christ’s body we’re all connected to each other, after all. When you lie to others, you end up lying to yourself.
Proverbs 4:23-27 MSG Version
Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life starts. Don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth; avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip. Keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions. Watch your step, and the road will stretch out smooth before you. Look neither right nor left; leave evil in the dust.
Proverbs 6:16-20 AMP Version
These six things the Lord hates, indeed, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look [the spirit that makes one overestimate himself and underestimate others], a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that manufactures wicked thoughts and plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, A false witness who breathes out lies [even under oath], and he who sows discord among his brethren…
Proverbs 6:16 MSG Version
Here are six things God hates, and one more that he loathes with a passion: eyes that are arrogant, a tongue that lies, hands that murder the innocent, a heart that hatches evil plots, feet that race down a wicked track, a mouth that lies under oath, a troublemaker in the family.
Proverbs 14:25 MSG Version
Souls are saved by truthful witness and betrayed by the spread of lies.
Proverbs 19:9 MSG Version
The person who tells lies gets caught; the person who spreads rumors is ruined.
Proverbs 25:18 MSG Version
Anyone who tells lies against the neighbors in court or on the street is a loose cannon.
1 Peter 4:15
But let none of you suffer as a murderer or a thief or any sort of criminal, or as a mischief-maker (a meddler) in the affairs of others [infringing on their rights].
Psalm 41:5-7
My enemies speak evil of me, [saying], When will he die and his name perish? And when one comes to see me, he speaks falsehood and empty words, while his heart gathers mischievous gossip [against me]; when he goes away, he tells it abroad. All who hate me whisper together about me; against me do they devise my hurt [imagining the worst for me].
PS 109:2-4
…the mouths of the wicked and the mouth of deceit are opened against me; they have spoken to me and against me with lying tongues. They have compassed me about also with words of hatred and have fought against me without a cause. In return for my love they are my adversaries, but I resort to prayer.
Proverbs 10:19
In a multitude of words transgression is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is prudent.
Proverbs 16:24
Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the mind and healing to the body.
Proverbs 18:6-8
A [self-confident] fool’s lips bring contention, and his mouth invites a beating. A [self-confident] fool’s mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to himself. The words of a whisperer or talebearer are as dainty morsels; they go down into the innermost parts of the body.
Proverbs 18:20
A man’s [moral] self shall be filled with the fruit of his mouth; and with the consequence of his words he must be satisfied [whether good or evil].
